Climate Change and the Challenges for Geotechnical Engineering

In this presentation climate change implications will be discussed by outlining a relationship between climate and reactive soil movements. The climate is defined in terms of the Thornthwaite Moisture Index (TMI) as used in AS 2870-1996 “Residential slabs and footings”. The yearly value of TMI determined for Adelaide, Melbourne and Sydney will be presented and related to soil movements. The effect of climate change predictions for Adelaide, Melbourne and Sydney on soil movements and the resulting implications for geotechnical engineers will be discussed.
