Abstract

The expansion of mass transport systems in Asia requires new infrastructure to be built around, above and below operating networks. These conditions, along with tight environmental controls necessary for work carried out amongst high population density areas, requires an unprecedented breadth of innovative solutions and technical skills for the safe, effective and technically sound construction of projects. This presentation will highlight the design difficulties and innovative and challenging construction methods used for the new Bugis station and associated Tunnel work in Singapore. The close interaction with existing station structures, existing soft ground conditions, stages of construction and variety of ground improvement techniques used to overcome the known as well as the unforeseen challenges during this design built project will be discussed.

About the Presenters

Peter Longstaff is the Managing Director of Advanced Foundation Solution (AFS) and Tim Palmer the General Manager of Grouting and Foundation Works Australia (GFWA). AFS and GFWA are Australian subsidiary companies of the Soletanche Bachy division, part of the larger Vinci Construction group which has successfully carried out a large number of complex underground infrastructure projects in Australia, Asia, the Middle East and Europe.

Peter and Tim have a combined 60 years of geotechnical engineering construction experience both at the technical and operation management level. Peter has extensive experience in design and construction of bored, CFA, displacement and driven piles including the Barangaroo Stage 1A construction, leading the company safety culture across for a successful project handover. Tim specializes in the construction management of tunnel works in Australia and in Asia.
