Design of Foundations Using The Cone Penetration Test

E.H. Davis Memorial Lecture

Barry Lehane

The Cone Penetration Test (CPT) is now the most popular in-situ test worldwide, largely due to its ability to provide continuous and reliable soil profile information in a rapid, cost-effective and digital format. This presentation shows how the CPT end resistance (qt) can be used directly in foundation design without the need for intermediate and often subjective interpretation. A simple model illustrating the relative effects of factors controlling the magnitude of qt is first described to provide a basis for correlations between qt and aspects of foundation performance. The development of a variety of design formulations for deep & shallow foundations and walls is then described. It is demonstrated that allowance for previously unaccounted for geometric and other effects greatly enhances the reliability of these formulations compared with previous CPT-based methods. The application of these methods to a variety of practical problems is also illustrated.

About the speaker

Barry Lehane University of Western Australia

Professor Barry Lehane has worked as a practitioner and academic in geotechnical engineering since 1984. Barry obtained his civil engineering degree from University College Cork in Ireland and then worked with Arup Geotechnics in London until he began his PhD at Imperial College, London in 1989. Following completion of his PhD in 1992, he again worked with Arup in London and Hong Kong before taking up a lecturing position at Trinity College in 1994. He moved to Perth in 2002 and has remained as a professor at the University of Western Australia since then. Barry has published more than 250 technical papers in international journals and conferences, and he continues to consult widely on a wide variety of national and international projects.
