Travertine: Historical And Geotechnical Significance In South East Tasmania

David Leaman

Travertine is generally produced in SE Tasmania as a product of the weathering of Jurassic dolerite but is only precipitated in quantity near sites of anomalous fracturing or rock dislocation whether by faulting or slope failure. Abnormal fluid flows are associated with such sites and many represent activity at times of climate change. Travertine is a faithful indicator of such past conditions and of weakened or altered material.
