The Performance Characteristics of Granular Base using a Laboratory Wheel Tracking Device

Dr Didier Bodin

Abstract

A new wheel-tracking machine has been developed to improve the characterisation of granular materials used in pavement construction. It was designed and manufactured in Australia within the framework of current European standard specifications developed for asphalt materials. The laboratory performance data collected to date indicates that the approach appears suitable to assess the rut performance of granular materials in-service. Validation again pavement performance data collected under simulated traffic (ALF) is underway.

Dr Didier Bodin is a principal research engineer at ARRB in the Pavement group. Didier was previously a researcher in LCPC’s (Laboratoire des Ponts et Chaussées – France) pavement department for 10 years.

As part of the Pavement Technology team, he is currently involved in Austroads projects dealing with rutting resistance characterisation of unbound granular materials and pavement rutting prediction.

His research interests are in the area of pavement material characterisation, pavement response, performance modelling/prediction and pavement design.
