The AGS has been notified that the industry giant and previous ISSMGE President, Professor Michele Jamiolkowski, passed away last week. The loss of Professor Jamiolkowski is a very sad day for the geomechanics profession, both in terms of the experience and expertise lost, as well as the unwavering advocate that we had for our industry. Professor Jamiolkowski was a prolific researcher, and many of the techniques we apply in our daily work have been influenced by in his work. Further, and unsually for a geotechncial practitioner, Professor Jamiolkowski also gained acclaim in the larger public domain for his “saving” of the leaning tower of Pisa.
The AGS has passed on our condolences, on behalf of our members, to both the ISSMGE and Italian Geotechnical Society (IGS).
