In situ testing of soil and rock
The SA/NT Chapter of the Australian Geomechanics Society (AGS) is proud to present our one day seminar for 2017, which will be held on Monday 16th October 2017. The Seminar forms part of a continuing program of technical events organised by the Chapter and will focus on in situ testing of soil and rock.
Who should attend and why?
Geotechnical engineers, engineering geologists and researchers involved in the planning and scoping of ground investigations and the interpretation of in situ testing of soil and rocks and others who wish to further their knowledge of the application of in situ testing to engineering design.
The 2017 Seminar will be a full day event and will present state-of-the-art practices, innovative technologies and case histories of in situ testing of soil and rock. The goal of the Seminar is to provide professional engineers, researchers, specialist contractors, regulators, educators and students the opportunity to meet and share their knowledge and experiences in this area.
The Seminar will cover the following topics:
- Scoping and planning of ground investigations
- In situ testing of soils and interpretation of test results for various applications including ground characterisation, design of foundations, retaining walls and ground improvement
- In situ testing of rock and interpretation of test results for civil engineering and mine development projects
- New methods and technologies in in situ rock testing

Technical Manager, CMW Geosciences
Mark is a chartered geotechnical engineer who is focussed on providing his clients with simple solutions to manage ground related risk. These solutions are based on sound technical principles and ultimately provide value-for-money. He has successfully led teams of geotechnical consultants on large multi-discipline infrastructure projects, including most recently as earthworks lead for the Waikato Expressway – Hamilton Section project in New Zealand where innovative earthworks and liquefaction techniques resulted in savings of more than $8M from TOC. Mark is now the East Coast Technical Manager for CMW Geosciences.
Director of Insitu Geotech Services (IGS)
Allan McConnell is a well-known geotechnical engineer, with 40 years’ experience, mostly in Australia. He has been a leader in one of the biggest geotechnical consulting practices in Australia and has won several engineering awards. Allan is now the principal of Insitu Geotech Services.
Formerly Principal Geotechnical Engineer, Department of Planning, Transport and Infrastructure, SA
Richard Herraman managed the Geotechnical Engineering Group of DPTI for 20 years. During this time his group provided a range of geotechnical services for many successful transportation infrastructure projects delivered by DPTI. During this time he became aware of the shortcomings of methods used for designing excavations and retaining structures in unsaturated clay. He worked with Mr John Woodburn, engineers in his Department, the Australian Geomechanics Society and the University of Adelaide to improve practice in this area of engineering. This is resulting in considerable savings and environmental benefits.
Dr Abbas Taheri
Senior Lecturer, School of Civil, Environmental and Mining Engineering, The University of Adelaide
Dr Abbas Taheri has over 16 years of industry, research and teaching experience in the fields of mining engineering, rock mechanics and geotechnical engineering. Dr. Taheri earned a Ph.D. in geotechnical engineering from Yokohama National University, Japan in 2008. His PhD research project is internationally acknowledged as an outstanding research work. In 2008 he was awarded a postdoctoral fellowship from Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) and joined Tokyo University of Science. In 2011 he was appointed as a lecturer at the University of Adelaide, where he is now a senior lecturer. He is a member of the Editorial Board of “Soils and Foundations” and “Minerals” journals and has produced more than 70 refereed publications. He has developed several novel in situ and laboratory testing methods and has broad experience in a wide range of testing in rock and soil mechanics.
Professor Kazuo Tani
Department of Marine Resources and Energy, Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology, Japan
Professor Tani graduated from The University of Tokyo, Japan, in 1984 and received a PhD in geotechnical engineering from University of Manchester, UK, in 1990. Between 1990 and 1999, he worked as a research engineer at Central Research Institute of Electric Power Industry, Japan. He became a professor at Yokohama National University where he stayed until 2012. He then worked for the National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Resilience, Japan as a research engineer until 2015. Since then, he has been a professor at Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology, Japan. Professor Tani has extensive experience in experimental Geomechanics and has been actively involved in developing new testing systems and improving current testing methods.
