A specialist contractor’s view to managing geotechnical risk in design and construction

A fundamental role of all Geotechnical Engineers is to identify and assist in the management of risks associated with the potential for variable ground conditions considered within our designs. We often wish that we had an effective crystal ball that provided definitive answers and filled in the all-too-common significant gaps in the geotechnical data including potential unforeseen latent conditions. In an ideal world, we would provide robust, optimized solutions with accurate predictions, providing our clients with the best value for money. Unfortunately, this is often not the case where even with industry leading rigorous design solutions, residual risks beyond our immediate control remain. If these residual risks are allowed to materialize, they can become significant hazards impacting on structure performance, project cost, program and safety. How we choose to manage these often-overlapping risks is influenced by the likelihood and impact of the identified hazard, our perception of how these may occur together with our client, employer and individual motivations and fears. We apply our knowledge and experience gained but need to remain inquisitive, imaginative and constantly aware that new risks can appear at any stage in the process. This presentation will provide a number of project examples from Peter’s 30+ years in the foundation sector with a number of key lessons learnt, on occasion through painful experience.

Peter Kingston Principal Geotechnical Engineer, FSG Geotechnics & Foundations

Peter Kingston has over 30 years of experience in geotechnical contracting and design and has developed a thorough working knowledge of deep foundations, retaining walls and ground engineering works with particular focus on effective risk management. His roles have included both State Manager and National Engineering Manager of major foundation contractors, which has involved the co-ordination, leadership and technical support of the engineering and state operational functions. His key client focus, together with open collaboration with project teams, has allowed Peter to contribute significant value engineering benefits throughout his career. Peter has worked across Europe, Central America and over the last 15 years throughout Australia, and has presented papers at a number of international conferences. During the last 2 years, Peter has transitioned from contractor to consultant and is now a Principal Geotechnical Engineer for FSG Geotechnics & Foundations.
