AGM & “A 21st Century Perspective on the tombs of the Valley of the Kings, Egypt”
Steve Macklin
The talk will describe some of Steve’s observations on the tombs of the “Valley of the Kings”, made whilst providing technical support during filming for a National Geographic documentary in 2008. The tombs were constructed near the present day city of Luxor, Egypt, during the 500 year period of the “New Kingdom”, between 1570 to 1070 BC. Pharaohs of the 18th to 20th Dynasties (including the well-‐known Tutankhamen) were buried in the Valley. Steve will briefly describe the geological, archaeological and geotechnical context of the site and will make some observations on the design and construction of the tombs from a 21st century tunnel designers’ perspective.
