AGS 2025 Industry Day at Macquarie University

The Sydney Chapter of the Australian Geomechanics Society (AGS) is delighted to host its Industry Day at Macquarie University on 4 March 2025. This event introduces undergraduate, postgraduate, and research students to the geotechnical engineering and engineering geology industry, as well as AGS activities. The programme features a series of short talks by AGS members, providing insights into the daily experiences of practising geotechnical engineers.

Mei Ai Khoo Senior Engineering Geologist, Gamuda

Mei Ai has been a Senior Engineering Geologist with Gamuda Australia since Jan 2023, working as the Geotechnical CPS Section Manager for the Westmead station and caverns site on the Sydney Metro West – Western Tunnelling Package project. Prior to the Sydney Metro West project, she worked in a geotechnical consultancy role on mining and civil projects across Queensland, Tasmania and New South Wales. She has more than 16 years of experience as a geologist, including roles in oil and gas, construction, and mining, across Australia and internationally.

Rhys McMillan Associate Geotechnical Engineer, Douglas Partners

Rhys is an Associate Geotechnical Engineer at Douglas Partners in Sydney, where he commenced his career as a graduate in 2017. Over the last 8 years, he has worked on a wide variety of projects across the property development, transport infrastructure and energy sectors in New South Wales, Victoria, and South Australia; in field, technical, and management roles. His experience includes roles on several major projects including Sydney Metro City & Southwest, Sydney Metro West, Sydney Gateway, Rhodes Station Precinct, Darling Harbour ‘Harbourside’, Western Sydney Airport and Project EnergyConnect.

Jenny Austin Associate Principal, ARUP

After graduating from Imperial College London in 2006, Jenny joined Arup Geotechnics and has been on an international career journey since working in London, Singapore and landing in Sydney over 7 years ago to lead the ground engineering design team on Metro Martin Place for the Macquarie Capital USP. Jenny leads the Ground Engineering Team for NSW and ACT comprising a wealth of different ground engineering specialists, she leads the team across a range of markets and project types, steering and supporting team and skills development to meet these needs. Jenny’s own background is in leading geotechnical design aspects of construction projects with most experience being in buildings projects specialising in deep basements and foundation design and third-party authority approvals associated with such developments, navigating plenty of soil structure interaction to push the boundaries on what can be agreed and undertaken around existing infrastructure and buildings.

Alice Clark Associate, Ground and Underground Engineering, Aurecon

As a chartered engineer with twelve years of experience within the industry, Alice has a proven track record of delivering results on major transport and infrastructure projects in Queensland, New South Wales and South Australia. Specialising in geotechnical engineering, Alice demonstrates strong technical capacity in the analysis and design of earthworks, as well as practical experience in the management, scheduling and supervision of site investigation works. Her technical expertise is complemented by experience in team, project and design management, providing effective communication, stakeholder engagement and management in multidisciplinary teams. She currently leads the Aurecon NSW & ACT Geotechnical team, which consists of over 40 professionals, and plays a key role in staff development and team support. Alice is an active member of the Australian Geomechanics Society, where she promotes industry participation, events and networking among geotechnical professionals.
