AGS Newcastle City Geology Tour

The AGS Newcastle City Geology Tour is loosely based on the excursion given in Field Geology of New South Wales by Branagan and Packham (2000), and Dr. Branagan himself has kindly agreed to offer his expert commentary at the various destinations.  The morning component of the tour (approximately 8:00-12:00) will commence at King Edward Park and features a walking tour of the geology around the Bogey Hole and Shepherds Hill, followed by a stroll from Newcastle Beach to Nobbys Head via Shortland Esplanade.  The afternoon component (approximately 1:00-4:30) will include trips to points of interest around Bar Beach, Merewether Baths, Charlestown, and Obelisk Hill.  In the course of the tour, participants will be exposed to aspects of the stratigraphy of the Newcastle Coal Measures, coastal erosion processes, engineering geology and structural features of the geology.  A hired bus will pick-up/drop-off participants at selected points and return them to King Edward Park for lunch and at the end of the tour.  A preliminary itinerary and map can be found in the Presentation Details.

The cost of the tour includes a box lunch at King Edward Park.  Walking parts of the excursion will involve exposure to the elements (sun, wind, and possibly rain) and require low to moderate levels of physical exertion.  Sturdy shoes and sun protection should be worn.
