Engineering Geology Of The Derwent River Area

AGS Tasmania Field Visit

Colin Mazengarb, Michael Vicary and Amara Priyankarage

A one day field trip to explore the geology of the Derwent Valley and the geotechnical challenges facing the hydro-electric assets in this area. Participants will travel by bus to inspect a number of sites along the way, including access to Hydro Tasmania dam sites.

The trip will be led by Mineral Resources Tasmania geologists and Hydro Tasmania geotechnical staff.

Participants will meet at 7.45am at the Hydro Tasmania building for a 8.00am departure returning no later than 6.00pm, Thursday
16 August.

Participants will need to supply their own lunches and refreshments. Lunch will be either on the bus or during a presentation to maximize the time spent onsite.

Minimum PPE requirements are Steel Toe Boots, long sleeved Hi-Viz gear and Wet Weather gear. Note the trip will go ahead in all weather conditions. Additional Hi-Viz will be supplied where necessary.

About the presenters

Colin Mazengarb

Colin is a graduate of Auckland University and worked for 20 years for the New Zealand Geological Survey as a regional geologist. For the last 15 years, Colin has been employed as an engineering –geologist by Mineral Resources Tasmania and specialises in regional scale natural hazard studies.

Michael Vicary

Michael graduated with a BSc(hons) degree from the Australian National University in 1987. Since then he has worked as an exploration geologist in Western Tasmania and is currently a Senior Geologist for Mineral Resources Tasmania.

Amara Priyankarage

Amara obtained his geology degree and masters some 40 years ago. His whole life was involved hydropower industry. He has worked in many countries in Asia before moving to Tasmania.
