Concepts & Parameters Related to Ground Improvement Illustrated by Case Histories
The International Society for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (ISSMGE) Technical Committee on Ground Improvement has proposed a classification system of ground improvement techniques according to the general nature of the soil, (frictional or cohesive) and the inclusion or not of added material (http://www.bbri.be/go/tc17). This classification system has been detailed in the state of the art report on construction methods at the Alexandria ISSMGE Conference last October. On the basis of this classification system, Serge will present selected case histories from around the world highlighting the initial concept and the relevant parameters for design, quality control and acceptance of the ground improvement works.
Serge Varaksin is the current chairman of ISSMGE Technical Committee on Ground Improvement. He has published over 50 peer-reviewed papers and has specialized in dynamic compaction and consolidation, dynamic replacement, vacuum consolidation, controlled modulus columns (CMC), stone columns, man-made fills, liquefaction, land reclamation, vibro-compaction, deep vertical drains and soft soils. He joined the Menard Company in 1973 after a short stint with Fondedile Belgium. Since then, he has devoted his career to creating the present global network of Menard companies, as Overseas Manager and later Deputy General Manager of the group. He has recently retired but continues to act as an adviser to the company, providing expert input on ground improvement projects.
