Ground-Structure Interaction

Panel Discussion

Panellists: Jenny Austin, Idy Li, Dr Jason Surjadinata, Sam Mirlatifi, Colin Edmonds, Jarrod Grimshaw and Dr Kourosh Keyvani

Ground-Structure Interaction (GSI) is the mutual influence between a structure and the surrounding ground on which it is constructed, playing a crucial role in determining the overall performance and safety of buildings and infrastructure. Effective communication and coordination between geotechnical and structural engineers are essential to avoid design errors, reduce costs, and prevent safety hazards. This panel discussion focuses on enhancing collaboration between geotechnical and structural engineers to improve accuracy, efficiency, and overall design quality. Our esteemed panellists will discuss approaches to facilitate effective collaboration between the two disciplines, calibrate complex GSI models, and validate the results. The impact and importance of other factors, such as software limitations, high-quality site investigations, and budget/time constraints, on the accuracy and robustness of the design will also be discussed.

Jenny Austin Associate Principal | Geotechnical Engineer| NSW&ACT Ground Engineering Team Leader at Arup

Graduating from Imperial College London in 2006, Jenny joined Arup Geotechnics and has been on an international career journey since working in London, Singapore and landing in Sydney 7years ago to lead the design team on Metro Martin Place for the Macquarie Capital USP.  Jenny leads the Ground Engineering Team for NSW and ACT comprising a wealth of different ground engineering specialists, she leads the team across a range of markets and project types, steering and supporting team and skills development to meet these needs.  Jenny’s own background is in leading geotechnical design aspects of construction projects with most experience being in buildings projects specialising in deep basements and foundation design and third party authority approvals associated with such developments, navigating plenty of soil structure interaction to push the boundaries on what can be agreed and undertaken around existing infrastructure and buildings.

Idy Li Group Manager – Ground Engineering at EIC Activities

Idy manages a team of more than 25 geotechnical engineers as the Group Manager of Ground Engineering at EIC Activities – the in-house technical advisor to CIMIC Group. She is a Chartered Engineer in Australia, New Zealand and the UK. She has 18 years of consulting experience and is a regular guest lecturer at Sydney University, Western Sydney and University of Technology Sydney.

Dr Jason Surjadinata Group Manager – Geotechnical at John Holland Group

Dr Jason Surjadinata is a principle geotechnical engineer with over 20 years experience in Australia and overseas markets (Asia primarily). He has worked across many facets of the industry, from design consultancies and construction contractors to part-time academic settings. He has spent a substantial period of his career in modelling and analytical work, with recent roles having a focus in risk minimisation and opportunity optimisation for major projects across the diverse Australian market sectors, such as, road, rail, energy generation and transmission, water, and mining, as well as stand-alone large-scale infrastructure projects (e.g., airport/port).  He is a part of John Holland technical specialist group (TEK) and manage the geotechnical specialist team in TEK (GeoTEK).

Sam Mirlatifi Technical Director/Team Lead – Tunnels & Geotechnics at GHD

With over 24 years of experience in civil, geotechnical, and tunnel engineering across consulting and construction companies, Sam excels in design leadership, construction support, and risk mitigations for complex projects in Australia and internationally. With a strong technical background in soil and rock mechanics and numerical modelling, he provides practical, cost-effective, and optimised solutions to a wide range of complex problems. As a team leader and technical director for GHD’s Sydney tunnels and geotechnics team, Sam leads innovative projects in the road, rail, water, and pumped hydro energy storage (PHES) sectors. Sam enjoys sharing his knowledge and making a positive impact in the field.

Colin Edmonds Technical Principal – Structure at EIC

Colin has over 30 years of experience in the design and construction of bridges and civil structures. He was worked in a variety of countries including Australia, the United Kingdom, Malaysia and Vietnam. His experience includes cable stay bridges, cast-in-situ, precast segmental, launched, segmental viaducts and cut and cover tunnels. He also bridges experience in major temporary works and construction engineering for complex projects.

Colin holds a Masters of Engineering in Engineering, Economics and Management from Oxford University. Colin has been involved with the design and review of many underground structures including Rozelle Interchange, M6, M8, Cross River Rail and Suburban Rail Loop. Colin lead the structures design team for detailed design of the NorthConnex project in Sydney.

Jarrod Grimshaw Associate Director – Structure at Enstruct

Jarrod Grimshaw is an Associate Director at enstruct/WSP and has provided structural engineering design and advice for over 15 years. After graduating from the University of Sydney with a combined Civil Engineering and Commerce degree (first class honours), Jarrod has established his engineering career designing and detailing a variety of structures constructed from steel, reinforced concrete, post-tensioned concrete, and timber. Jarrod is responsible for all aspects of project delivery including concept design, design development and tender, construction documentation and providing site phase services, including close collaboration with the site engineering, civil and geotechnical teams. His project experience covers all sectors including Health, Aged Care, Education, Defence, Commercial, Residential and Retail and he is currently the NSW Health lead for WSP.

Dr Kourosh Keyvani Partner, Head of Forensic Technical Services, Asia Pacific, HKA

Dr Kourosh Kayvani has built a career spanning 30 years as an engineering innovator, technical expert, executive leader, educator, and a leader in connecting industry and academia.

As a practising engineer, Kourosh has played leading roles in the design and delivery of many complex and award-winning projects across the globe. His project portfolio includes West Kowloon Terminus in Hong Kong, Barito Suspension Bridge in Indonesia, Lusail Stadium in Qatar, and such projects in Australia as ANSTO OPAL nuclear reactor, the Sydney International Hockey Stadium, Melbourne Star Observation Wheel, and Sydney’s Civic Tower, ANZ Tower, 5 Martin Place, CommBank Stadium, amongst many others.
