International Women in Engineering Day 2025 Sydney

Together we engineer

Muriel Demarcus, Mehrnaz Alibeikloo and Romy Brook

This year’s International Women in Engineering Day (INWED) celebrates the theme together we engineer – a powerful reminder of the vital contributions women engineers make every day across the globe. From shaping sustainable solutions to strengthening communities, their work supports lives and livelihoods worldwide. By honouring their achievements, we renew our commitment to building a more inclusive, innovative and equitable engineering profession for everyone.

This event is to celebrate International Women in Engineering Day! We’ll have three speakers sharing their remarkable journey on the challenges of being a woman in engineering and woman in Australian Geoemechnics Society (WiAGS).

About the speakers

Muriel Demarcus Founder and CEO, Marsham Edge

Muriel, an accomplished engineer, mother, and leader, brings 30 years of expertise to infrastructure and AI innovation. Having directed over $10B in energy and infrastructure projects and programs across Europe, Australia, and Asia, she founded Marsham Edge in Singapore, delivering AI solutions to clients on three continents, advising government agencies, and earning shortlist recognition from leading incubators. Educated at École Centrale Paris and La Sorbonne in engineering, mathematics, and commercial law, she excels in solving complex challenges.

As a woman balancing motherhood, menopause, and the demands of the sandwich generation, Muriel embodies resilience and authenticity. Her career transitions (including from engineer to entrepreneur) required  strategic vision and courage. She also writes on AI’s societal impact, mentors women to lead with confidence and champions people with disabilities in the workplace.

Muriel speaks globally on purposeful career pivots, balancing life’s complexities, and driving innovation.

Mehrnaz Alibeikloo Senior Associate Geotechnical Engineer, WSP

Mehrnaz is a Chartered Geotechnical Engineer with over 12 years’ experience in a variety of geotechnical infrastructure projects. Currently working at WSP, she is particularly experienced in numerical modelling across a range of geotechnical analysis and design, including port and marine facilities, roads, and power projects. As a mid-career professional, Mehrnaz will share her unique journey navigating technical growth and professional development as a woman across different cultural contexts.

Outside of work, she pursues piano, Setar, and yoga professionally, reflecting her commitment to balance and well-being.

Her talk will explore the challenges and strengths of balancing professional ambitions with personal identity, highlighting the importance of authenticity, resilience, and inclusive workplace support in fostering career success.

Romy Brook Second-year Environmental Engineering Student, UNSW

Romy is a second-year Environmental Engineering student at the University of New South Wales (UNSW), currently pursuing a minor in Humanitarian Engineering. She is passionate about integrating a humanitarian lens into engineering practice, recognising the importance of socially responsible and community-focused solutions.

Romy is actively involved in the engineering community at UNSW. She serves as Director of Development for CEVSOC (the Civil and Environmental Engineering Society), where she has led key initiatives including the annual Careers Fair and the Industry Mentoring Program. She also volunteers with Engineers Without Borders (EWB), contributing to the Regional Engineering Youth Outreach Program by delivering STEM workshops to schools in western New South Wales.

In addition to her volunteer work, Romy is part of the Pacific Water Security design team, a ChallENG project focused on developing water testing kits to support improved water security in the Solomon Islands.

Driven by a desire for continuous learning and meaningful impact, Romy is particularly interested in pursuing a career in water or geotechnical engineering.
