Majors Road Upgrade
Brenton Harris
The Majors Road upgrade project involves widening an existing bridge over the Southern Expressway and the construction of 4 new on/off ramps to provide better connectivity to commuters in the southern suburbs. The project also includes upgrades to the Majors Road pavement over the western end of the road alignment and upgrades to cycling and shared user paths.
The project area is underlain by an extremely reactive Black Earth soil profile, which presented design challenges for the competing priorities of achieving adequate pavement performance whilst also increasing tree canopy adjacent to the road.
The project is being delivered as a design-and-construct project, with the project awarded by DIT in mid-2023. Construction activities commenced in earnest at the start of 2024, with the construction phase currently ongoing.
Brenton will summarise the geotechnical aspects of the project from a design perspective and also reflect on some observations from the construction phase.
