Regrowing the Forest over a Large Waste Dump in Indonesia – An Engineered Solution

Doug Stewart

The talk will describe the extensive engineering studies and field trials carried out by and for the mine operator (Newmont Nusa Tenggara) over a period of about five years to develop a modified method of covering and vegetating the slopes. The engineering studies included field instrumentation, field and laboratory testing, unsaturated seepage analysis and stability analysis. The success of the modified method hinges on the interaction between rainfall, soil suction and vegetation.
