Reinforced Soil Structures and the development of BS8006:1-2010
Steve Corbet
Geosynthetic materials offer the designer solutions for a wide range of soil stabilisation and ground improvement treatments in infrastructure projects, including hard faced walls, wrap-around faced green slopes, basal reinforcement and load distribution platforms. Our speaker, Stephen Corbet, will give an insight into the use of geosynthetic materials for soil reinforcement, and the development of BS8006:1- Code of Practice for Strengthened/Reinforced Soils and other Fill. He will also use his experience to provide a commentary on best practice techniques and specification direction for such materials, and the alignment of BS8006 with other design codes such as Euro Code 7 and Australian design practice.
About the speaker

Steve Corbet is one of the UK’s leading independent experts in the designing, specifying and standardisation of geosynthetic materials. He was the Chairman of British Standards (BSI) Committee B526/4 from 1998 to 2012, during which time he was responsible for the update and reissue of BS8006 (October 2010). Steve is also the Chairman of the BSI Technical Committee B553-Geosynthetics; he has represented the UK on the CEN Technical Committee TC189 for the preparation of geosynthetic applications, testing and certification standards since 1990; and has recently been appointed the Chairman of the ISO Technical Committee TC221- Geosynthetics. He has also been a member of the International Geosynthetics Society (IGS) where he served as Chairman of the Technical Committee that produced the IGS Guide to the Specification of Geosynthetics.
Steve is based in the UK and is responsible for the technical performance of the AECOM’s Ground Technology Group in the UK.
