The Lawrence Hargrave Drive Project, NSW
Alan Moon
Lawrence Hargrave Drive, a coastal road north of Wollongong, is one of the most scenic roads in New South Wales and a major tourist attraction. A section of the road has been judged to have the highest slope risk in the state with a long history of rock falls, debris flows, embankment failures and road closures. In August 2003 the State Government announced a major project to upgrade the road. In December 2003 the Roads and Traffic Authority (RTA) signed an alliance agreement with Barclay Mowlem, Coffey Geosciences and Maunsell to investigate options, design and carry out the project.
The presentation by Alan Moon dealt with geotechnical aspects of the project including the hazard investigation, risk assessment and adopted solutions which included bridges, extensive slope stabilisation and protection works. Alan is a Senior Principal with Coffey Geosciences based in their Adelaide office. He is an engineering geologist with over 30 years in a wide variety of projects in Australia, New Zealand and South East Asia.
More information about the Lawrence Hargrave Project can be obtained from the RTA website.
