Visitors Night: History of Waterfall Gully, Annual Visitors Night and AGM

Each year, the last meeting is devoted to a social event where members and others are encouraged to bring along their wives and partners for a fine and inexpensive meal. The evening includes a non-technical presentation of general interest. This meeting is a great way to socialise with fellow members of the Australian Geomechanics Society in an informal and friendly environment. Robert Martin is a well known Adelaide Hills historian, and author of the book “Under Mount Lofty”. During the evening Robert will give an account of Waterfall Gully from Aboriginal times to the present, concentrating on the tourist precinct around the first waterfall, which has been an attraction since 1837. His talk was broad-ranging, touching on roadmaking, architecture, civil engineering, gardening, conservation, art, recreation, etc, even suicide and haunting. It was illustrated by a selection of the many pictures and photographs that this popular spot has generated.
