The ISRM Technological Innovation Award is conferred on ISRM corporate members in recognition of one or more of the following contributions to the progress of applied rock mechanics and rock engineering: Nominations for the award shall be by the Chairs of the ISRM National Groups, which are kindly requested to spread this announcement through their members and to coordinate the nomination procedure. The deadline for submission of nominations for the ISRM Technological Innovation Award is 16 April 2023 Full details on the award are available on the ISRM Science and Technology Awards web page.
The President, Professor Marc Ballouz, is pleased to announce that Dr Andrew McNamara will be appointed as the new Secretary General of ISSMGE. Dr McNamara will take up the appointment after the next ISSMGE Council Meeting on 13 August 2023 held in conjunction with the 17th Asian Regional Conference on Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering, Astana, Kazakhstan. Dr McNamara is a practicing engineer with a strong attachment to academia and research. He is both Chief Engineer, Skanska UK Building and Senior Lecturer in Geotechnical Engineering, City, University of London. He will bring a wealth of experience and leadership to the ISSMGE Secretariat, and we look forward to working with him on the Board of ISSMGE.
The IAEG Young Engineering Geologist (YEG) group is seeking to publish short articles written by younger members of IAEG (under 40 years of age) in the monthly IAEG connector E-newsletter starting in 2023. The articles are intended to provide a platform for sharing research ideas and experiences with the wider IAEG community. This initiative is intended to be similar to the “Submit a photo” corner in the IAEG connector. We are currently seeking paper submissions and ask you to please circulate this request among the national groups of your regions. The details about topic and structure of the articles are outlined in the attached document. The submission should be done to our email address: [email protected]

The Australian Geomechanics Society (Sydney Chapter) has established the Harry Poulos Award in recognition of the extraordinary impact of Professor Harry Poulos’s contributions to pile foundation analysis and design and his work in understanding soil structure interaction. His research has enabled a more reliable approach to be adopted for pile design, replacing procedures that previously relied purely on experience and empiricism. He has been a prolific contributor to and supporter of the activities of the international and Australian geotechnical community.
