Since 1982 a bronze medal and a cash prize have been awarded annually by the ISRM for an outstanding doctoral thesis in rock mechanics or rock engineering, to honour the memory of Past President Manuel Rocha while stimulating researchers. In addition to the Rocha Medal award to the winning submission, one or two runner-up certificates may also be awarded. An invitation is now extended to the rock mechanics community for nominations for the Rocha Medal 2023. Full details on the Rocha Medal are provided in ISRM By-law No. 7. The AGS hosted several female speakers in 2020, including keynotes at local symposia, and Dr Jackie Skipper presenting her Glossop Lecture. We intend to continue encouraging female professionals to contribute in this way in 2021. Building on this increase in exposure for women in our industry, the AGS would like to produce a dedicated issue of the Australian Geomechanics (AG) journal in 2021, containing papers written by female geotechnical professionals (as the main author or a co-author). We invite women working in either academia or industry (or both) in the fields of geotechnical engineering/ engineering geology to submit papers in 2021 for publication in the AG journal.
