Design of gravity walls according to AS4678-2002

The use of AS4678-2002 (Standards Australia 2002) in the design and construction of earth-retaining structures has been a standard approach in non-infrastructure projects. Its use should increase with its inclusion into the National Construction Code. Unfortunately, the author has come across designs that state that their approach follows AS4678, but when scrutinized the design falls far short of acceptable standards. There is clearly, therefore, a disconnect between what designers think they should do when using AS4678, compared to what is required.

This paper aims to provide clarity in the design approach for gravity retaining walls using AS4678.
