2023 AGS Sydney Chapter Debate Night

December 6, 2023

The AGS Sydney Chapter, in collaboration with TC103 (ISSMGE technical committee for Numerical Methods in Geotechnics) proudly presents a debate session in December 2023 on a hot topic, shortlisted by the AGS members.

The debate surrounding the assertion that “Sophisticated Numerical Analysis in Geotechnical Design: Is It a Waste of Time?” stems from the evolving landscape of geotechnical engineering methodologies. Advocates for a simplified approach argue that the intricacies involved in sophisticated numerical analyses may not always yield proportionate benefits, given the uncertainties inherent in geotechnical conditions. They contend that reliance on extensive numerical models can be time-consuming and may not significantly enhance the accuracy of predictions. On the contrary, proponents of sophisticated numerical analysis argue that advancements in technology allow for a more comprehensive understanding of complex soil-structure interactions. They posit that these analyses contribute to safer and more cost-effective designs, especially in challenging geological contexts. The debate thus revolves around finding the optimal balance between the practicality of simplified methods and the potential advantages offered by sophisticated numerical analyses in geotechnical design.
