Designing on soft soils: Finite element modelling of consolidation and creep
Dr. Rajibul Karim
Construction on soft soil is often challenging because of its low shear strength, high water content and large deformation. The settlement can continue to occur for years after the end of construction because of the slow rate of consolidation and sometimes creep. This presentation will discuss some of the challenges associated with the finite element modelling of consolidation and creep behaviour of soft soils. Selection of appropriate models and deduction of model parameters will also be discussed with specific attention paid to estimation of hydraulic conductivity especially in vertical drain improved ground. Analysis of a full-scale embankment constructed on soft soils will be used as a case study to reinforce the importance of the appropriate choice of constitutive models and material parameters.
