The Impact of Rolling Dynamic Compaction
Dr Brendan Scott
This presentation will focus on Brendan’s PhD thesis entitled “The Impact of Rolling Dynamic Compaction.” This research quantified the effectiveness of the 8-tonne 4 sided impact roller in terms of towing speed, depth of influence and the energy delivered to the ground. The in-ground soil response was measured in real-time using bespoke instrumentation in full-scale field trials.
This presentation will discuss practical applications and limitations of impact rolling, as well as key results and findings, including equations that were developed from this research to allow practitioners to predict the depths that could be improved to enable rolling dynamic compaction to be used and applied with greater confidence. Field trial results will be compared to a number of projects and case studies that have used the 4 sided impact roller.
